Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Diamond Jaguars celebrated 2014 Senior Day with a Peach Belt Conference sweep over Georgia Southwestern – highlighted by Sophomore Paige Deschaine's career-high 16 strikeouts in the game two victory.
The Jaguars (19-30, 6-10 PBC) honored senior Macy Terry and Becky Newhouse during a pre-game ceremony before the Jaguars took two from the visiting GSW Canes (23-23, 7-11 PBC). An early lead was taken when the Jags got an RBI from Brianna Dickens – who scored Hannah Vaughn with a single in the second inning of game one.
In the fifth, freshman Mallory Ferguson knocked her first career home run with a runner on base to take a 3-0 lead. The Canes got one run in the seventh, but Jaguar lefty-starter Haley Birkle got out of the inning to seal the 3-1 win. Birkle (7-14) got the complete game win to allow eight hits for one run, while Ashley Cavendar (10-13) got the loss in 7.0 innings. Ferguson was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Dickens went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two the Jaguars shut out the Canes behind Deschaine's (10-15) 16 recorded strikeouts – her career-high total. After the Jaguars gave Deschaine a 6-0 lead to work with, she retired the Canes in the seventh, all by strikeouts. Ferguson continued her reign at the plate with a 2-for-3 game two where she posted two RBI and a scored run.
Vaughn went 1-for-2 with a home run to card two RBI and a run and Brooke Stephens posted two hits with a run. The Jaguars play at rival USC Aiken on Tuesday, April 8 for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Jags travel to Young Harris (Apr. 10) and Lander (Apr. 12) for two more PBC series to end the inning.
