Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The Diamond Jaguars responded from a 3-0 game one loss at USC Aiken to take the Peach Belt Conference nightcap meeting by the same score off just four hits and another nine-strikeout day from sophomore slinger Paige Deschaine.
Kaitlyn White began the game with a single up the middle and took second on a wild pitch from GRU (19-30, 6-10 PBC) game-one starter Haley Birkle. Birkle got her first out on a groundball to the right side that moved White to third. Samantha Chubb laid down a successful squeeze bunt to plate the first run of the day.
USCA (20-31, 7-11 PBC) senior India Kornegay recorded her 1,000th career strikeout after sitting down the Jags' leadoff batter to begin the doubleheader. Kornegay (20-3) became just the third player in Peach Belt Conference history to reach the milestone and is within reach of Amy Dumas, who totaled 1,020 career strikeouts during her years at Augusta State.
Kornegay held the Jags to five hits in her complete game win, while the Pacers prevailed 3-0 to take game one. GRU lefty Haley Birkle (8-15) only allowed two earned runs in her 6.0 innings of work to take the loss. USCA started Kornegay again in game two which saw another 3-0 final, this time in favor of the Jaguars. GRU only struck out once against Kornegay in the nightcap and were paced by Erin Rozier's 2-for-3 day with two RBI.
At the plate with two outs in the fourth, Rozier belted a solo home run to center field for a mid-game lead and Mallory Ferguson boosted the advantage in the sixth when she brought home Ashley Benton with a liner to right field. Later in the inning Rozier knocked a double to left center for the Jags to go up 3-0.
Sophomore Paige Deschaine (11-15), who ranks third in the Peach Belt for strikeouts, seventh for ERA, and ninth in wins, held the Pacers to five hits and struck out nine for the Jags in game two. GRU Augusta has two more league doubleheaders to close the season, beginning with a trip to Young Harris on Thursday, April 10 and concluding with a Saturday, April 12 twin bill at Lander.
