Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The GRU Augusta Jaguars (13-5, 5-4 PBC) were down by five at Young Harris (5-9, 2-6 PBC) and hit back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Keshun Sherrill in the final 20 seconds to steal a 67-65 Peach Belt Conference game on the road. Senior Devon Wright-Nelson led GRU with 20 points and eight rebounds.
Under 10 minutes to play, it was a tie game 50-50 when Wright-Nelson hit two at free-throw line. He connected twice more after a YHC three pointer, but YHC found their way to the free-throw line again and tied the game at 58-all on two from Isiah Johnson. YHC went up by two baskets after four more at the charity stripe. YHC was 21-14 (87.5 %) at the free-throw line on the day.
Johnson completed an and-1 play after he was fouled by senior Henry McCarthy to give the Mountain Lions a 65-60 lead with 2:09 in the game. Wright-Nelson found Sherrill on the perimeter for a three-pointer and D'Angelo Boyce followed suite for Sherrill to drain consecutive treys and steal a 67-65 game on the road.
Young Harris' CJ Wilson entered the game ranked second-best for points per game (19.7) in the Peach Belt Conference and he started the scoring with a three pointer on his first look of the day.
Sherrill got going early for the Jaguars and helped distribute the ball well to seniors Devonte Thomas and Devon Wright-Nelson. All three ended the day with double-figure points, led by Wright-Nelson's 20 points and eight rebounds. Sherrill had 18 points and Thomas added 10.
Sherrill redeemed himself from an opening turnover and hit his first attempt at a jumper, before Thomas sunk his first three pointer of the day. GRU took a five-point lead, their largest of the first half, on another Sherrill jumper off an assist from Keith Crump, but the Mountain Lions kept shooting and Isiah Johnson tied the game twice with a layup and three pointer.
YHC attacked the paint in the first half and took a seven-point advantage after numerous free throws. They would take the half up 35-29 after Johnson hit two free throws and Kevin Altidor's layup off a steal.
Out of the whistle, Wright-Nelson and Vlad Cobzaru made consecutive layups, but three Jaguar turnovers helped rebuild a nine-point YHC lead at 42-33. Sherrill, Wright-Nelson, and Thomas scored on the next five possessions, before Henry McCarthy grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for two points to tie the game at 45-all.
Down the stretch it was Wright-Nelson and Sherrill who took it over for GRU in route to the comeback win. The Jags only shot 42.6 percent from the floor, but held the Mountain Lions to 38.8 percent shooting. YHC owned the charity stripe with a 87.5 percentage to GRU's 50.0, but the Jags outrebounded 44-31 and 20 second-chance points to YHC's four.
The Jaguars continue league play on the road at Flagler on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 3:30 p.m. game in St. Augustine, Fla.
