Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – GRU Augusta's D'Angelo Boyce forced a turnover out of a 30-second called timeout and Henry McCarthy grabbed back-to-back offensive rebounds off two missed shots to score a tip-in basket and give the Jaguars a 76-74 Peach Belt Conference victory Monday night at Francis Marion University.
The game had 16 lead changes, but the Jags (10-3, 2-2 PBC) were led by five players in double-figure points – highlighted by Keshun Sherrill's 23, with five assists a steal, and a block. Wright-Nelson had 14 points, seven assists and three steals, and McCarthy posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. He added three blocks on the night, while Thomas added 11 points and Crump 10.
Devonte Thomas gave the Jags a nine-point lead to start the game over FMU (7-5, 0-4 PBC) with back-to-back three pointers from the left wing, resulting in a called FMU timeout with 16:58 on the clock. The Pats rattled off six straight, but Boyce forced a turnover and found Devon Wright-Nelson in the lane as the Jags took a 14-12 lead into the first media timeout.
Mike Davis Jr. gave FMU their first lead 15-14 at 13:40, but Thomas hit his third trey of the game to take it back. It was a back and forth one-point game for the next several minutes. FMU's Detrik Browning and Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan kept the Patriots in the game, both connecting from the floor and getting to the line.
With 7:41 to go in the first half, Henry McCarthy's hook shot made it 23-20 in GRU's favor. Out of a Dip Metress called timeout, the Jags executed the inbound play with perfection as Keshun Sherrill streaked through the lane for a layup off an assist from Boyce. Tied 32-all, Keith Crump made a lone free throw, but the Pats answered with a layup to take a 34-33 halftime lead. The Jags only got to the free-throw line twice in the first half, but outshot FMU 50 percent to 38.2 percent from the floor – thanks to Sherrill's early 10 points and Thomas' three buckets from beyond the arc.
Out of the break, McCarthy scored the first six Jaguar points and Boyce found Wright-Nelson for consecutive buckets. Keith Crump's layup rolled in for an eight-point lead, their largest advantage since the opening three minutes of the game. FMU's Detrik Browning scored a jumper that he was fouled on and he made the free-throw for his 17th point of the night and to get the Pats within five. Browning ended the night with a game-high 27 points and All-Jordan followed closely with 21.
Allen-Jordan stayed on his pursuit of the basket and got the free-throw line to tie the game at 56-all with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. From there, the score stayed within four points. Right at a minute, Wright-Nelson hit a shot off a Thomas assist to even it at 74-74, after Browning scored a layup.
GRU called a 30 second timeout and forced a turnover out of the whistle on a steal from Boyce. McCarthy grabbed back-to-back offensive rebounds off missed shots from Wright-Nelson and Thomas and scored the second on a tip-in basket to give the Jags a 76-74 victory.
GRU outshot the Pats 52.7 percent to 44.4 percent from the floor and owned the glass 35 rebounds to 29. FMU outscored the Jags 42-36 in the paint, but the quick-paced GRU offense had 25 fast-break points to FMU's 15.
