Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – GRU Augusta rallied to score two runs in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game at West Georgia, but couldn't complete the comeback win to fall 4-3 in a non-conference game to the Wolves Tuesday afternoon. The Jaguars went down in the first inning for the third-straight game and matched their opponents' hits in their second-straight loss.
It was Jamie vs. Jamie on the mound to start the game, with a senior right-handed pitcher taking the mound for GRU (1-2) and West Georgia (3-0). Senior righty Jamie Suggs made his first start for GRU since March 15, 2014 at Lander. Suggs (0-1) went 2.2 innings in his first outing of his senior season and gave up four earned runs and five hits.
West Georgia's Jamie Sexton (1-0) recorded 5.0 innings of work and gave up one run on three hits. The Jags went three-up, three-down off Sexton in their first two bats, before senior Kevin Dodson, who earned the start at third base, lead off the third inning with a double to right center. Later in the inning, CJ Reed singled through the left side and Dodson was thrown out at home from left field to end in the inning and keep the Wolves on top 2-0.
West Georgia added two runs on Suggs off two hits in the third, making way for freshman Zach Ledbetter on the mound. Ledbetter got an infield groundball to get out of the inning, but the Wolves carried the 4-0 lead.
Senior Nate Crown took a hit by pitch to start GRU's fifth, before he stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball. An RBI-single from Dodson plated Crown for a solo run in the third. Dodson paced the Jaguar offense with a 3-4 performance in his 2015 debut.
GRU started the eighth inning perfectly, when junior shortstop Hunter Boose singled up the middle and Nick Rau belted the first homerun of his Jaguar career over the left-field wall for a 4-3 game. Two fly-outs and a pinch-hit groundball ended the Jags' eighth as the Wolves hung on for the one-run victory.
Boose turned in a 2-4 day with a scored run and Rau was 1-3 with the two-RBI homer. After Suggs's start, the Jaguars used seven arms in the bullpen who combined to give up no runs and only allowed three runs. The Jags play at Erskine on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 2:00 p.m. and host crosstown rival Paine College on Saturday, Feb. 14.
