DUE WEST, S.C. – The Jaguars played for the first time on the road this year and continued their success they've had at home with an 11-1 victory, before falling 2-0 in game two to split the non-conference doubleheader at Erskine on Thursday afternoon in Due West, S.C.
The first three Jaguars (14-4) to go to the plate in game one all reached base and all stole second. Hannah Wilson scored on a wild pitch for the first score and doubles from Hannah Vaughn and Lindsey Stokes gave GRU a 4-0 lead over Erskine (7-10) in the first inning.
Brooke Stephens continued the fun in the second inning with another two-RBI double for GRU, scoring Mallory Ferguson and Molly Walton. Stephens scored the next Jaguar run on a wild pitch to make it 7-0 after the second inning.
Jaguar starting pitcher Paige Deschaine gave up a solo homerun to Gabby Keisler in the bottom of the second, but the offense picked her up with a 10-1 lead in the third om Wilson's fourth long ball of the season to score Stokes and Kristen Bagley. The Jags won with a final score of 11-1 in five innings.
Senior Hannah Vaughn went 3-3 in game one with two RBI, two runs, and a homer. Wilson had three RBI on one hit and Stephens racked up two RBI.
Deschaine (8-1) won her seventh-consecutive game on the mound. She struck out nine and only allowed three hits for one run. Deschaine has struck out six or more batters in every start this season.
In game two, the Jaguars were held scoreless with Erskine starter Candace Fitch tossing a one hitter to lead her team to a 2-0 victory. The Flying Fleet scored on an RBI-single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to split the doubleheader.
GRU lefty Haley Birkle (6-3) 6.0 innings and allowed six hits for two runs, while striking out four.
The Jags stay on the road for Peach Belt Conference play this weekend when they travel to Armstrong on Saturday, March 14 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader and to Flagler on Sunday, March 15 for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
