Jags Give Up Series Sweep To No. 12 Pirates

AUGUSTA, Ga.  – The Jaguars dropped the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium to give the No. 12 Armstrong Pirates the series sweep.

GRU freshman Jim Wagner had a huge day against No. 12 Armstrong in the doubleheader this afternoon, going 5-7 and earning three RBI as well as scoring the lone run for the Jags in the first game of the day

Freshman right-hander Matthew Kuhlenberg started game one of the doubleheader. He pitched 5.1 innings with one strike out, giving up five hits, two runs, and two walks before being relieved by sophomore righty, Will Robertson. Robertson pitched 3.2 innings, striking out two and allowing four hits and one run in game one.

The Jags had nine hits by six batters during game one. Junior Hunter Boose (3-8) and sophomore Clint Hardy (3-8) both went 2-4, while Wagner went 2-3.  Wagner, the designated hitter, scored the lone run of the game, reaching first on a base hit to right-field, stealing second, and taking third and home on two overthrows by Armstrong.

David Hagelston, freshman right-hander, started the second game of the day for the Jaguars. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out three batters.  Junior lefty Frank Warren came in to pitch 2.2 innings, and junior right-hander David Bermudez closed out the game.

In the fourth inning of game two with the Jags down 2-0, Wagner had his third hit of the day to center field, scoring Hardy and Nick Rau (3-8) to earn two RBI and tie the game. The Pirates scored two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to lead 5-2 before Wagner smacked his fifth hit to right field for his third RBI of the day.  The Jags weren't able to bring anyone else home and dropped the final game 5-3.

The Jags host West Alabama for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. in Lake Olmstead Stadium. Due to other conflicts, there will be no video or live stats. Tune in to Twitter @gru_jaguars for updates.
