Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta softball upset the No. 17 Georgia College Bobcats in game one 4-2 of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader before dropping the second 10-5 on Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
The Jaguars (11-3, 1-1 PBC) ruined the Georgia College (22-4, 3-1 PBC) 12-game win streak they had entering the day.
GC pitcher Marissa Boyette, who entered the game ranked second in the league in strikeouts and third in earned run average, got her first loss of the season in game one with the Jags knocking six hits.
GRU game-one starter Paige Deschaine painted the outside corner with a first-pitch strike to start the game and got a strikeout for the first out of the day. After getting a lineout to center field, Deschaine dealt a walk and hit by pitch. Lacey Najafi hit an opposite field two-out single into right field for a 1-0 lead.
GC threatened another run in the third inning with runners on the corners, but senior center fielder Molly Walton threw out the runner from third who tried tagging on a fly ball. Deschaine got the next batter to fly out to the infield to escape the inning.
A double from Caitlyn Glenn started the Jags' at bat in the third inning and Hannah Wilson tied the game with a grounder up the middle for a 1-1 game. Wilson stole second in the next at bat and reached third on a throwing error, before Walton's RBI-bunt gave the Jags a 2-1 edge.
Again the Bobcats threatened a run from 90-feet away in the fifth, but GRU used another timely throw to home plate from Hannah Vaughn to catch the runner and stay ahead by one run. Najafi didn't let the lead last long and blasted a solo homer off Deschaine to knot the game at 2-all.
Sophomore Mallory Ferguson and freshman Lindsey Stokes knocked back-to-back doubles in the sixth to steal a 4-2 lead. GRU held on for the win while Deschaine moved to 6-1 on the year with her complete-game five-hitter where she allowed two runs and tossed seven strikeouts.
Wilson went 2-3 in the leadoff role with an RBI and scored run to pace GRU. Deschaine stranded eight Bobcat runners, while the Jags left three on base.
GC jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning of game two on two hits off GRU left-hander Haley Birkle. Birkle (5-2) kept the damage minimal and left the bases loaded with a fly ball to left field. The Jags threw out their third runner of the day at the plate in the top of the second when shortstop Brianna Dickens fired a throw home to escape the inning unscathed.
GC's Carly Lewis started game two on the mound and gave up her first run in the bottom of the second to even the game 1-1. Stephens started the inning with a double in the gap to right field and Dickens brought her home eventually with a sacrifice bunt on the squeeze play.
Shawnnda Martin retook the lead for the Bobcats when she homered to dead center for a 4-1 swing, but the Jags weren't done. Three-straight singles started GRU's third inning and an overthrow from the GC shortstop brought in two Jaguars for a 4-4 tie game. The Bobcats loaded the bases again in the fifth inning, but Birkle focused and got back-to-back infield outs.
After back-to-back singles in the seventh, the Bobcats got an RBI-double from Holland Coursey to go up 5-4. GC totaled six hits in the seventh to score six for a 10-4 win. GC had 14 hits in game two to GRU's six.
GRU hosts non-conference Wingate on Tuesday, March 10 for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
