Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars returned home from a four-game road stretch to host Lander on Tuesday afternoon and after winning 9-3 in game one behind Paige Deschaine's pitching performance, GRU Augusta took the second by scoring three runs on three hits for the walk-off win in the seventh. Hannah Wilson's RBI-single to center field scored two to complete the Peach Belt Conference sweep.
It was Pink Out for Strikeout Cancer Day, sponsored by the Zeta Tau Alpha Greek organization of Georgia Regents University to support cancer awareness. The Jags wore their pink-alternate jerseys and the ZTA's were on site to give out information and prizes, while accepting donations towards fighting cancer.
After two GRU (27-11, 13-7 PBC) singles from seniors Molly Walton and Hannah Vaughn in game one, a walk loaded the bases in the first inning. The Jags drew a wild pitch to score Walton from third for the quick 1-0 lead.
Mallory Ferguson sent her fourth homerun of the season over the left-field wall in the third inning to spark a two-out rally for a 3-0 Jaguar lead. Brianna Dickens boosted the lead to 4-0 with a double in the right-center gap.
The Bearcats (12-26, 6-16 PBC) scored their first off GRU righty Paige Deschaine in the fourth, with a double to left field for a 4-1 game and a two-run homer in the sixth made it a one-run game. Deschaine (13-1) endured the Lander offense and recorded her 14th complete game and her 13th win this season, striking out eight and giving up seven hits for three runs.
The Jags blew it open with five more runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 final. Vaughn went 2-3 with an RBI, Ferguson was 1-4 with two RBI and a scored run, and Walton was 1-3 with two scored runs.
GRU went down 1-0 to Lander in the top of the first inning of game two on a double. A sacrifice bunt in the second built the Bearcat lead to 2-0, but Brooke Stephens put GRU on the board with a single to score Vaughn for another one-run game in the third.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Ashley Benton and Molly Walton laid down back-to-back bunts for base hits and a Mallory Ferguson walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Benton to make it 3-2 and Lander intentionally walked Stephens to reload the bases.
Hannah Wilson delivered a soft fly-ball single to center field to score two for the 4-3 final. GRU lefty Haley Birkle (13-8) got the win in her 15th complete game.
Vaughn, Walton, and Stephens all had a hit in game two, and Wilson went 1-4 with two RBI. Benton was 1-3 with a scored run.
The Jaguars play at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, April 18 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in Americus, Ga., before they host Young Harris on Sunday, April 19 for Senior Day and a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. The Jags will honor senior trio Brooke Stephens, Hannah, Vaughn, and Molly Walton in a pre-game ceremony on Sunday before first pitch.
