Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta softball team hosted their last home series of the 2015 season and swept the Young Harris Mountain Lions to end the regular-season 31-11 overall and 17-7 in the Peach Belt Conference.
The Jaguars honored seniors Brooke Stephens, Hannah Vaughn, and Molly Walton in a pregame ceremony for 2015 Senior Day. For both games, Stephens went 4-7 with four RBI, Vaughn was 2-6 with three RBI and three scored runs, and Walton went 2-5 with three scored runs and one RBI.
GRU went 21-5 at home on Jaguar Field this season.
GRU (31-11, 17-7 PBC) starting pitcher Paige Deschaine struck out two to strand two Young Harris (30-16, 13-9 PBC) runners on base in the first inning of game one.
The Jaguar senior trio anchored the offense in their first at bats when Walton and Vaughn reached on back-to-back singles and Brooke Stephens sat back on a changeup to deliver a two-run double for a quick 2-0 lead. YHC got even in the top of the third when they drew two bases-loaded walks to tie the game.
The Jags scored five runs on five hits in the fourth inning – highlighted by Stephens' second double and Vaughn's bases-clearing triple. The Mountain Lions loaded the bases on the Jags in the sixth, but Deschaine tossed her fifth strikeout of the game to escape in the inning.
Deschaine (15-1) gave up a two-run homer in the seventh, but she got a groundball double play to end the game. She struck out five and gave up four runs on six hits in her 15th win of the year.
Vaughn and Stephens each went 2-3 with three RBI and Vaughn had two scored runs in game one. Dickens went 1-3 with a run and RBI, Hannah Wilson was 2-3 with a run, and Walton went 1-3 with two scored runs.
After YHC took a one-run lead in the first inning of game two, Mallory Ferguson scored Vaughn on a single to right field. Walton endured a long at bat in the second and put GRU ahead 2-1 with an opposite-field single to left field.
Ferguson blasted a no-doubt homerun in the third inning, her fifth of the season, to boost the lead to 3-1 for GRU. After Wilson tripled off the left-field wall, Lindsey Stokes plated her from third with a single to center.
The Jags totaled 11 hits in game two to take a 7-2 final over YHC and sweep the series for senior day. Lefty Haley Birkle (15-8) logged a complete-game performance in 7.0 innings to get the win for GRU.
Ferguson enjoyed a 3-4 day with three RBI and a scored run, Wilson was 2-4 with two scored runs and an RBI, and Stokes went 2-2 with one run and RBI.
The doubleheader ends the regular-season schedule for the Jags and they will await seeding for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament on April 24-25, hosted by Georgia College, in Milledgeville, Ga.
