Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – With 13 hits, including two home runs, the Jaguars weren't able to overcome the hot bats of the Pacers and fell 10-6 in tonight's single non-conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Freshman right-hander David Hagelston took the mound for his ninth start for (GRU 15-25, 8-15 PBC). Hagelston sat the first three Pacers down in order, all three flying out to right fielder, Jim Wagner.
Leadoff batter Clint Hardy (3-5; RBI, HR) opened the game for the Jags with a second pitch home run over the left-center field wall in the first inning. This was Hardy's seventh homer of the season and his 25th RBI.
USC Aiken's TJ Costen returned the favor in the second inning with a home run to center field to tie the game. The Pacers scored four in the third inning off of four singles, a SAC fly, and an error. In the top of the fourth, USC Aiken brought three more home before, with one out and a runner on second, the Jags brought junior lefty Frank Warren in to relieve Hagelston, who pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, down by seven, the Jags fired up the bats. Juniors Nick Rau (1-5), Connor Gilbert (1-5), and Cole Thompson (2-3; RBI) hit back-to-back singles to plate one and a one-out single by Hunter Boose (2-4; RBI) scored one to bring the score to 8-3.
After a double by Hardy, a bunt-single by Kevin Dodson (1-4), and singles by Drew Taylor (3-5; RBI; HR) and Boose, the Jags scored one each in the fifth and sixth innings, both on errors, coming within three of the Pacers.
In the seventh inning, Taylor knocked a bomb over the center field wall for his 11th homer of the season, bringing his RBI total to 37 and closing the gap to two. The Jags brought three more pitchers to the mound during the last four innings, but the Pacers (30-13) scored two unearned runs in the eighth to take a 10-6 lead, a score they would hold at the end of the game.
The Jaguars host a Peach Belt Conference series with UNC Pembroke this weekend, April 24-26, with single games each day, Friday at 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Lake Olmstead Stadium. All games will have live stats and video. Sunday is 2015 Senior Day where a pregame ceremony will take place before first the 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
