Box Score 2 MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Jaguar Softball team split the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the Montevallo Falcons, winning game one 3-1, before falling in the second by the same score on Thursday night.
GRU (24-10, 10-6 PBC) recorded 10 hits in the opening game and only struck out twice as a team. Montevallo (21-31, 11-14 PBC) took the initial lead 1-0 in the second inning, but the Jaguars scored all three of their runs in the fourth to steal the lead for the win.
Righty Paige Deschaine (12-1) struck out six and only allowed two hits in her complete game win in 7.0 innings on the mound. She now has the sixth-most wins in the Peach Belt and the fourth-best earned run average.
The offense helped her out with Ashley Benton and Kristen Bagley each going 2-3 and Brooke Stephens 2-4. Stephens and Bagley each had an RBI and Hannah Vaughn was 1-3 with a scored run.
UM scored two runs in the second inning of game two for their second quick lead of the day. Jaguar lefty Haley Birkle (11-8) surrendered six hits in 6.0 innings of total work on the mound for GRU and took the loss, as the bats only combined for three hits in game two.
GRU's Caitlyn Glenn knocked a pinch-hit double in the fourth inning to score Hannah Vaughn, but the Falcons added one more in the fifth to take an eventual 3-1 win.
UM used three pitchers in game two and held the Jags to the lone run on three hits. Glenn, Benton, and Vaughn each had one hit in the loss.
The Jaguars play at Columbus State for a PBC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. in Columbus, Ga.
