GRU Splits Doubleheader At Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.  – The GRU Augusta baseball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia College on Saturday, May 2 in Milledgeville, Ga.

GRU Augusta (18-27, 11-17 PBC) outhit the Bobcats 12-9 in game one and got the win, backed by right-handed pitcher David Bermudez. Bermudez (3-0) got his third win with his 5.1 innings of work where he struck out four and allowed six hits for three runs.

The Jaguars took the intital lead in game one and stayed ahead the entire nine innings, but things got interesting in the ninth inning. The Bobcats had a two-out rally in the ninth of game one, and with the tying run at the plate, catcher Steve Hazel blasted a ball to left center that Jaguar centerfielder Clint Hardy caught while crashing into the wooden outfield wall for the final out. Hardy held on to the ball that came just a few feet from tying the contest.

GC plated three in the ninth, but GRU side-arm slinger Adam Grice closed it out to get his third save of the year. Clint Hardy went 4-5 with four scored runs in game one and Hunter Boose was 3-4 with an RBI. Drew Taylor went 2-4 with two RBI also in game one.

In game two, the Bobcats outhit the Jags 11-9 to take a 10-3 final and split the day. GRU recorded two hits apiece from Hardy and Taylor, but the seven arms used in the Jaguar bullpen allowed 10 runs to give the Bobcats the edge.

Jaguar southpaw Matthew Kuhlenberg (3-5) logged 2.1 innings in the game-two start and surrendered four hits for five runs in the loss.

The Jags wrap the series with a single game on Sunday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m.
