The Jags dropped the opener against Carson-Newman 6-3 on Friday afternoon to move them into the elimination bracket. In their second game of the regional, GRU took another initial lead, but it didn't last.
A leadoff walk from Ashley Benton and a single from Molly Walton started the game for the Jags in the top of the first. Head Coach Melissa Brocato put on a successful double steal and Brooke Stephens plated Benton on a sacrifice fly, before Hannah Wilson singled through the left side to score Walton for a 2-0 lead.
Lefty Haley Birkle made her 22nd start on the mound for GRU and tossed 2.1 innings, before Paige Deschaine logged 3.2 innings of work.
Armstrong got to Birkle in the bottom of the first and tied the game at 2-2 on three hits, but GRU retaliated quickly. Freshman Lindsey Stokes continued her offense from day one of the regional and stroked a double and scored on Brianna Dickens' RBI groundout for a 3-2 swing.
GRU knocked three more hits in the third for a 5-2 lead – highlighted by Hannah Vaughn's two-run single up the middle. Again the Pirates rallied for a big four run inning in the third on five hits and an error from the Jags. The Jags fell to the final score of 6-5 on Saturday.
Molly Walton was 3-4 at the plate to spark the Jags offense and Vaughn was 1-3 with two RBI.
