Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars returned home to Jaguar Field after 10 road games to start the 2016 season and knocked three home runs in the home opener on Wednesday afternoon to sweep the Erskine Flying Fleet.
Augusta (2-10) took game one 2-0 off two solo home runs from sophomore Lindsey Stokes and senior Casey Rowland and sophomore Carolyn Edwards produced a three-run bomb in the second meeting to the seal the sweep.
Jags junior Kristen Mills (1-1) sat down Erskine in order to start the game. Mills struck out two in the second and third innings and she left the bases loaded with a pop up to end the fourth with a no-score game. Mills got the win in 4.2 innings on the mound, striking out four with two hits.
Augusta had runners on the corners in the first inning, but the Jags tried to tag on a fly ball to the centerfield and got caught at the plate.
They got on the board when sophomore Lindsey Stokes led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to centerfield for a 1-0 lead and senior Casey Rowland sent another long ball to right centerfield in the sixth to build a two run advantage.
Senior Paige Deschaine got a save in 2.1 innings of work. Deschaine struck out three and allowed zero hits. Rowland went 2-3 in game one, Ashley Benton and Lindsey Stokes were 1-2 and Carolyn Edwards posted a 1-3 day.
Augusta relied on the deep ball in game two after Edwards blasted a three-run knock for a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Freshman righty Emily Hittinger made her second appearance of the season and started on the mound for Augusta. Hittinger (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings surrendered seven hit with two strikeouts.
Erskine's Danica Newton took the game one loss on the mound and Candace Fitch recorded the second in game two.
The Jags travel for their second non-conference tournament of the season this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20 at Lenoir-Rhyne University and Catawba College. On Saturday, Augusta faces Lenoir-Rhyne at 12:00 p.m. and Carson-Newman at 2:00 p.m. in Hickory, N.C., at Lenoir-Rhyne.
On Sunday, the Jags play in Salisbury, N.C., at Catawba College. Augusta plays Belmont Abbey at 9:00 a.m. and host Catawba at 11:00 a.m.
