Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars fell 12-3 and 9-5 in a non-conference doubleheader with the Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Augusta (8-4) prevailed over the Panthers (6-6) in game one with a 5-3 win on Friday, Feb. 19 under the Lake Olmstead lights. After dropping game two of the series and the opener of the doubleheader, the Jags were outlasted 9-5 in the third meeting.
In game one, junior Clint Hardy and senior Hunter Boose traded places in the first inning with back-to-back doubles. Sophomore Brent Alford lined an opposite-field single for a 2-0 lead, but Florida Tech delivered three runs in the second to steal the lead and plated two more on two hits in the third.
Hardy went 4-8 with two runs and an RBI and Boose combined for a 3-9 day with two runs and an RBI. Senior Nick Rau drew four walks with a hit and run and senior catcher Cole Thompson went 3-4 in game two. Senor Connor Gilbert carded two RBI in game two with two RBI.
Down 5-2 in the first game of the DH, the Jags went to senior righty CJ Reed on the mound after lefty junior Will Thompson made the start and gave up six hits for four runs.
Reed struck out four in his 3.1 innings of relief work and gave up one run. Sophomore lefty Jordan Kelly took over the mound in the seventh inning to face one batter before junior righty Will Robertson entered in the seventh as well.
The Panthers produced three runs in the seventh, making way for freshman Chase Slone on the mound for the Jags. They tacked on two more in the eighth and won a 12-3 final over the Jags.
Will Thompson (1-1) got the loss for Augusta, while Tyler Deel earned the win in 5.0 innings for the Panthers. Hardy went 2-3 with a run and Alford was 2-4 with two RBI and a run for the Jaguars.
Augusta totaled nine hits in game one, but the Panthers powered 13 for the win.
In game two, Augusta led first with a 1-0 lead after the first inning on Gilbert's sacrifice fly ball that plated Boose. A two-run second inning for the Panthers stole the lead and they never let it go.
Freshman Aron Chick (1-0) made his first start of his career for the Jags and pitched 3.0 innings to give up two runs on four hits while striking out three. Sophomore Casey Lenoch came in for the fourth inning and recorded 2.2 innings before the Jags went to the bullpen to close the game.
Augusta got a run back in the fifth on Hardy's solo homer, but the Panthers went up 8-2 with three scored runs in the sixth and took a 9-5 final.
Florida Tech starter Justus Labigang (1-0) recorded 5.0 innings in the game-two start and allowed four hits for two runs while striking four.
Augusta travels to Valdosta State on Wednesday, Feb. 24 for a 4:00 p.m. start in Valdosta, Ga.
