Box Score Augusta competing in Pepsi Cola Pop-Off Series Feb. 5-6 in Florence, S.C.
FLORENCE, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars opened play at the Pepsi Cola Pop-Off Series on Friday, Feb. 5 and put up 13 hits to win a 12-4 non-conference game over the Claflin Panthers.
A bunt single from junior Cole Janousek loaded the bases for Augusta (2-1) in the second inning. A pair of hits from junior Tyler Roberts and senior Hunter Boose combined for three runs and a sacrifice fly from junior Clint Hardy plated another.
After drawing a walk to begin the top of the second inning, sophomore Jim Wagner made his second appearance at the plate in the inning and scored seniors Connor Gilbert and Drew Taylor with a single up the middle.
Ahead 7-0 after another run on a Taylor single, the Jags gave one back to Claflin in the third. Back-to-back singles from the Panthers started the inning and a wild pitch from Jones scored the first run before a sac fly made it 7-2.
Jaguar senior Nick Rau belted a homer over the left centerfield wall on a 1-1 count to keep the Jags rolling in the fourth and the scoring continued. Augusta combined for 13 hits to win a 12-4 final.
Junior right-handed starter Tristan Jones made the Friday night start and got his first win of the year.
Boose went 3-5 with three RBI for Augusta and Janousek was 2-2 with three scored runs and two walks. Eight other Jaguars recorded one hit each in the win.
Jones (1-0) gave up three runs on four hits while striking out three in his 5.0 innings on the mound. Freshman Aron Chick sat down five on strikeouts in his collegiate debut of 3.0 innings before sophomore David Hagelston closed out the game with an inning.
The Jags play a non-conference doubleheader against King at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 with two seven-inning games. Augusta will be the home team in game one on Saturday and visitors in game two against King. Live stats will be provided for game one.
