Jags Fall Twice At West Georgia In Final Inning Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars traveled to Carrollton, Ga. on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against the University of West Georgia Wolves. The Wolves took both games of the doubleheader in heartbreaking fashion, each by just a one-run margin with both coming down to the final inning.

In game one, West Georgia (4-0) jumped out to an early lead over Augusta (0-6) with an RBI in the third and a solo home run in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. UWG's lead could have easily been larger had it not been for Augusta's solid pitching and infield play to get out of a bases-loaded situation in the second.

Augusta got on the board in the fifth inning after sophomore Erin Rozier singled to center field to drive in freshman Alex Head and cutting the lead to 2-1. Senior Casey Rowland hit a two-run homer to left in the sixth, giving the Jaguars their first lead of the game. It looked as though the Jaguars had the victory, until a single by West Georgia in the bottom of the seventh brought in two runs to steal the win 4-3.

Rowland led the way offensively for the Jaguars, going 2-3 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Paige Deschaine pitched a complete game for Augusta and recorded eight strikeouts on the day.

In game two of the doubleheader, West Georgia jumped out early once again, scoring the opening run in the bottom of the first. Augusta quickly answered after sophomore Auburn Balcorta smacked a bases-clearing double that put the Jaguars ahead 3-1.

The Jags strengthened their lead in the third by scoring two more runs to build the lead to 5-1. Augusta maintained momentum until the bottom of the third when West Georgia's bats heated up. Over the next three innings the Wolves scored five unanswered runs, including the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.

Augusta's Balcorta led the way for the Jaguars in game two, going 3-4 with four RBI. Junior Ashley Benton went 2-3 in the leadoff spot with a walk and scored run.

Jaguar game-two pitcher Haley Birkle struck out one batter in 4.1 innings pitched, while giving up seven hit for six runs. Junior Kristen Mills came on in relief and recorded one strikeout of her in her 2.3 innings.

Augusta plays at Wingate on Wednesday, Feb. 10 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in Wingate, N.C.
