Box Score 2 Augusta hosts Georgia Southwestern March 6 at 1pm
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Peach Belt Conference play commenced on Tuesday night for the Augusta Jaguars at Georgia College and they fell 7-2 in game one and 8-5 in the second meeting at the Peeler Complex.
The Jaguars (8-16, 0-2 PBC) outhit the Bobcats (16-3, 3-1 PBC) 6-5 in game two, but couldn't overcome the late rally as GC held on for the sweep.
The Bobcats brought in three runs on two hits and an error in the first inning and built an eventual 7-1 lead after the fourth inning of game one. Augusta sophomore Carolyn Edwards drew a walk to begin the second inning and scored on an error to get the Jags on the board.
Junior Kristen Mills (1-2) struck out two in the start and allowed five runs (four earned) in her 1.2 innings on the mound. Senior Paige Deschaine pitched 4.1 innings and struck out five while surrendering two runs.
Deschaine, Edwards, and junior Ashley Benton went 1-2 for Augusta and senior Kristen Bagley and sophomore Erin Holcomb were each 1-3 in game one.
GC starter Carly Lewis (9-1) recorded a complete-game win and struck out four.
Sophomore Lindsey Stokes continued a strong start to the season with an RBI double in the first inning of game two to score Benton. The teams exchanged a run in the second and third inning and each scored two in the fourth for a 4-3 Jaguar lead going into the fifth.
Balcorta and freshman Emily Hittinger produced RBI singles for the Jags to take the lead, but the Bobcats answered with three in the fifth and two in the sixth on a two-run homer to steal the lead.
Augusta made it interesting in their final scheduled at bat when Bagley scored off a grounder from Edwards for an 8-5 game, but the Bobcats held on for the sweep.
Stokes had a pair of doubles and an RBI to go 2-4 in game two, while Bagley, Balcorta, Edwards, and Hittinger had an RBI as well.
Senior lefty Haley Birkle got the loss after pitching one inning to allow the go-ahead run. Hittinger made the start and went 4.0 innings and gave up five runs on four hits.
The Jaguars play a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 5 in Newberry S.C. for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against the Newbery Wolves. Augusta hosts Georgia Southwestern on Sunday, March 6 for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field.
