Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars outhit the Newberry Wolves 17-8 in a non-conference loss on the road Tuesday night in Newberry, S.C.
Coming off a league-series sweep over Young Harris College where they combined for 39 hits across three games, the Jags (11-5) produced 17 hits in a 10-7 loss while committing five errors against the Wolves.
Augusta meets Newberry (14-4-1) again when they host the Wolves on Tuesday, April 12 for 4:00 p.m. single game in Augusta, Ga.
Junior Tyler Roberts was 3-4 with a scored run and seniors Nick Rau, Drew Taylor, and Cole Thompson were all 3-5, with Thompson producing two RBI. Senior Hunter Boose recorded two RBI with a 2-5 day.
Senior Nick Rau rolled into a double play in the first inning that scored junior Clint Hardy after he started the game with a single up the middle.
Sophomore lefty David Rivera made the midweek start on the mound for Augusta and allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits in his 1.2 innings pitched. An RBI single started the Newberry scoring before a wild pitch and infield error brought a few unearned runs across for a 4-1 lead.
The Jags got help from the Newberry defense and scored a run in the third and fourth on errors. The Jaguar bats earned the next four runs in the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from C. Thompson and Boose.
Up 7-5, Augusta gave back a run when sophomore slinger David Hagelston surrendered a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Senior David Bermudez made an appearance out of the bullpen and the Wolves plated two on a two-run homer in the sixth to spark the comeback.
The Jags used three pitchers across two innings with freshman Aron Chick (0-2) and junior Will Robertson both pitching in relief. Chick gave up three runs (two earned) on one hit in 0.2 innings before Robertson closed it out.
Down by three runs in the eighth inning, Augusta knocked consecutive singles from Rau and Taylor but the Jags couldn't unload the bases.
The Jags host Young Harris College for a three day Peach Belt Conference series March 4-6 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Jags play Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and host the series finale on Sunday, March 6 at 1:00 p.m.
On Saturday, March 5 the Jags host the annual PINK OUT game. The game serves to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and the GRU Cancer Center. All fans are encouraged to wear pink!
