Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars swept the Coker Cobras in a non-conference doubleheader, winning 8-0 in game one and 3-0 in the second meeting on Sunday at Jaguar Field.
Augusta (11-23) is now 5-3 at home this season. The Jaguars ended the first meeting short with an 8-0 run-rule victory where they scored five in the fifth over Coker (9-14-1).
Lefty senior Haley Birkle made the start for Augusta and dealt two strikeouts to get out of a jam in the first inning with Coker runners on the corners. Birkle had four strikeouts through her first two innings and stranded the runners on base with an early lead to work behind.
Sophomore Carolyn Edwards loaded the bases on a single to left field after sophomores Lindsey Stokes and Auburn Balcorta reached on a walk and single. Augusta took the lead with senior Casey Rowland's RBI knock to score Balcorta and an infield error scored Stokes and Edwards for a 3-0 swing.
The Cobras threatened a run in the third inning, but sophomore right fielder Erin Holcomb threw out a runner at home on a single to to keep the lead intact.
For the second straight day, Edwards delivered a double off the left-field fence to score two and lift Augusta up 5-0 in the fifth inning. Holcomb traded places with a double and senior Kristen Bagley brought her home for a 7-0 lead on a single. A liner from sophomore Ashley Boyd gave the Jags the 8-0 final.
Edwards went 2-3 with a pair of runs and two RBI, Holcomb was 2-3 while Rowland and Boyd each had a hit and RBI.
Birkle (4-6) struck out eight batters in her 5.0 innings and didn't allow a run on four hits. Tabitha Allen (4-7) got the loss for Coker on the mound.
In game two, Bagley brought in one on a double to left center for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Working with a small lead, senior Paige Deschaine (5-8) cruised through three innings on the mound while posting five early strikeouts.
Taylor Forehand (2-6) made the game-two start for Coker and gave up another run on a sac fly in the fourth for a 2-0 Jaguar lead. The Jags scored another for the 3-0 final and Deschaine got the win.
Augusta hosts back-to-back Peach Belt Conference series with Flagler on Saturday, March 19 and Armstrong on Sunday, March 20 at Jaguar Field. The Jags will host 2016 Senior Day for Saturday's doubleheader to honor our four seniors – Kristen Bagley, Haley Birkle, Paige Deschaine, and Casey Rowland.
