GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Augusta University baseball team (13-10, 5-4 PBC) fell 8-4 to the Lander Bearcats (20-5, 12-3 PBC) in Greenwood, S.C., Sunday afternoon in their third and final meeting of the weekend to give the Bearcats the Peach Belt Conference series sweep.

In a game largely controlled by the Jaguars, Lander was able to pull out a victory with a seven-run rally in the eighth inning. Augusta put up 12 hits in comparison to Lander's six, but weren't able to capitalize on their opportunities.

Augusta junior Will Thompson (2-2) gets credited with the loss, while Lander's Robbie Hoyt (1-0) takes home the win. Thompson went 7.1 innings and allowed four hits for five runs (four earned).

Offensively for the Jaguars, there was no shortage of hits. Senior Hunter Boose went 2-5 with a homer, senior Drew Taylor went 2-5 with a run, and senior Cole Thompson went 2-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Jim Wagner went a perfect 3-3 with a run. Despite the offensive power, Augusta left nine men on base on the day.

Boose kicked off the scoring for Augusta with a solo home run in the first that was quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning by Lander. Augusta retook the lead again in the fifth when Nick Rau hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Wagner. The Jaguars added to that lead in the sixth, taking advantage of a bases loaded situation and putting two more runs on the board for a 4-1 lead.

Just as it looked like Augusta was going to pull it out, Lander put together a seven-run eighth inning. Heading into the eighth, the Bearcats only had one hit on the day. The rally consisted of five hits and Thompson was pulled on the mound.

Augusta went through five more pitchers before getting out of the inning and the Bearcats hung on for the 8-4 final.

Augusta hosts Valdosta State on Wednesday, March 16 for a 4:00 p.m. single non-conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
