Augusta Takes Three In Row From Armstrong On The Road

SAVANNAH, Ga. – After taking game one on Friday for the early Peach Belt Conference series lead, the Augusta Jaguars swept the doubleheader at Armstrong State to take the series 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Jags won 10-1 and 8-5 in day-two action.

The Jags (17-10, 8-4 PBC) put up 12 hits in game one over the Pirates (17-10, 8-4 PBC), backed by a complete-game performance from junior Tristan Jones. In game two of the series, Augusta got another long outing on the mound from right-handed junior Joey Stillwell and knocked 12 more hits, before they survived game-three 8-5.

Stillwell (4-0) recorded his season high 7.2 innings of work on the mound and only allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts in game two.

Augusta struck first again in the second faceoff when junior Clint Hardy scored junior Jamal Cummings for the first run. Senior Drew Taylor belted his first of two home runs with a two-run shot for a 3-0 advantage after the third inning.

Hardy plated Cummings again the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to boost the Jags and he followed it up with another two-run long ball for a 6-0 Augusta lead. Each team scored one for a 7-1 game heading to the ninth inning and the Jags tacked on a few more for a 10-1 game-one final.

Hardy was 3-4 with five RBI and two runs, Taylor went 3-4 with two RBI and one run, and Cummings scored three times in a 2-3 performance for the Jags.

Augusta took the first lead again in game three with senior Hunter Boose scoring on a throwing error after he reached on a single and stole second, but Ryan Petersson tied the game with a solo homer for Armstrong off Jags game-three pitcher Will Thompson.

Drew Taylor sent his second home run of the game over the left-field wall for a 2-1 advantage in the third inning, but the lead didn't last. The Pirates stole a 3-2 affair in the in the fourth inning and tacked on two for a 5-2 lead on five hits.

Sophomore Casey Lenoch relieved midway through the third inning for junior starter Will Thompson and struck out two batters while giving up two runs before he got out of the fourth.

Cummings drew a walk for the Jags and scored an unearned run on a throwing error after he stole second. After reaching on the error, sophomore Brent Alford scored for a one-run game in the sixth innings before the lead went back to the Jags.

Another Armstrong infield error in the eighth scored Blue Sanderson and Hunter Boose for a 6-5 lead change.

Lenoch (3-0) held the mound for the Jags and struck out five while keeping the Pirates from scoring in 5.0 innings.

Senior Conner Gilbert was 3-5 for the Jags and Boose went 2-5 with two RBI and two runs. Ryan Lawless (1-1) got the loss for Armstrong. He was one of five pitchers to log innings for the Pirates in the third game.

Augusta plays a non-conference midweek game at Emmanuel on Tuesday, March 22 at 4:00 p.m. in Franklin Springs, Ga.
