Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars fell in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to the Newberry Wolves in back-to-back games on the road.
The Jags (8-19) couldn't produce a run in game one on five hits and dropped a close one-run game in the second meeting with an eight-hit showing.
The Wolves held Augusta scoreless in game one with Maude McCourry pitching a complete-game shutout. The Jags sent runners to the corners in their last scheduled at bat of game one, but couldn't scrounge up a run in their last attempt.
Junior Kirsten Mills surrendered five runs on four hits in her 1.2 innings on the start for the Jaguars, while senior Paige Deschaine relieved in 4.1 innings to allow one run on two hits with five strikeouts.
Junior Brianna Dickens logged two hits and junior Ashley Benton and sophomore Lindsey Stokes each had one in the loss.
In the second meeting, Stokes tripled to score Benton for the initial Augusta lead and senior Kristen Bagley scored senior Casey Rowland with an RBI single through left side for a 2-0 advantage.
Three hits scored three runs for a 3-2 Newberry swing in the second. The next inning, Newberry notched another to take a 4-2 lead off Jags game-two starter Emily Hittinger (1-3). The Jaguar freshman pitched 3.0 innings and gave up seven hits for four runs.
Senior lefty Haley Birkle relieved for the Jags and held the Wolves scoreless for the rest of the game with three strikeouts.
Freshman Alexis Schlein produced a hit through the left side to plate freshman Alex Head for a 4-3 game, but the Wolves withstood for the win.
In the second meeting Benton had two more hits in the leadoff position and Stokes, Schlein, and Bagley all had a hit with an RBI.
Newberry starter Hannah Blakley went 2.0 innings before Devon Morrison gave 5.0 innings of work on the mound to get the win. Hittinger got the loss for the Jaguars.
Augusta hosts a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 6 with the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes at 1:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field.
