Box Score 2 YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars lost a pair of Peach Belt Conference games on the road against Young Harris on Wednesday afternoon in Young Harris, Ga. The Jags fell 6-4 and 5-2 on the day.
The Jags (8-22, 0-6 PBC) fell by two runs to Young Harris (16-6, 3-1 PBC) in game one after taking the first lead of the game and matching nine hits to the Mountain Lions. The second meeting saw YHC take a quick 4-0 lead that they never gave up.
Augusta hosts two non-conference doubleheaders this Saturday and Sunday at Jaguar Field. The Jags meet Lenoir Rhyne on Saturday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m. and face Coker on Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 p.m.
The Jaguars host their Pink Out games to support the GRU Cancer Center on Saturday, March 12. The game serves to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and the university cancer center. All fans are encouraged to wear pink!
In the second inning of game one, junior Ashley Benton and sophomore Auburn Balcorta hit back-to-back singles and sophomore Carolyn Edwards cleared the bases with a two-out rip for the first lead up 2-0.
Young Harris retaliated with a game-changing three runs in the third inning. After YHC scored another solo run in the fourth, the Jaguars tied the game as Edwards delivered again with a double to the right-center gap that scored sophomore Lindsey Stokes and freshman Alex Head.
The tie game didn't last and the Mountain Lions plated two in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly and single. The Jags loaded the bases in the final at bat on an Edwards walk, but couldn't produce a late hit.
Jags senior Paige Deschaine (4-7) struck out two and allowed nine hits for six runs on the mound. Edwards and Benton paced the Augusta offense with Edwards going 3-3 with three RBI and Benton 3-4 with a run. Balcorta was 2-4 with a run and Stokes had a hit and a run.
In game two, the Jags trailed 4-0 after the second inning and put up their only two runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Augusta fell 5-2 down the stretch and hit three hits to YHC's seven.
Freshman Emily Hittinger (1-5) was the game two starting pitcher for the Jags and she went 1.2 innings and gave up five hits for runs. Lefty senior Haley Birkle came on in relief for 4.1 innings and only allowed two hits for a run.
Benton, Balcorta, and Stokes each had a hit as the three leadoff batters for Augusta in the loss.
