Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – In their final pair of home games for the 2016 season, the Augusta Jaguars (18-30, 7-13 PBC) dropped game one 6-1 to Columbus State (24-23, 8-12 PBC) before using two home runs to rally from behind and win 7-3 in game two.
Augusta tied the first game 1-1 in the third inning after CSU scored the first in the top half of the inning. With the game even at one apiece, the Cougars broke it open with one run in the sixth and a four in the seventh off a grand slam.
The Jags matched seven hits with CSU, but couldn't come back late in the seventh inning. In game two the Jags outhit CSU 12-6 for the win.
Senior Haley Birkle (6-11) went the distance again for the Jags in game one on the mound and pitched 7.0 innings to give up seven hits for six runs in the loss.
Sophomore Auburn Balcorta was 2-2 with a walk, sophomore Lindsey Stokes went 1-3 with a run, and sophomore Lindsey Stokes walked twice with a hit.
Columbus State pitcher Darby Demarest (2-3) came on in relief to get the game-one win in 3.2 innings, after Peyton Sorrells started and went 3.1 innings.
Kayleigh Briant and Keeli Waugh each had two hits in game one to anchor the CSU.
In game two, the Cougars enjoyed a three run first inning for another quick lead, but Augusta scored two in bottom of the first and senior Kristen Bagley's second homer of the season made it 5-3 in the second inning.
Senior righty Paige Deschaine (10-9) made her team-high 26th appearance on the mound and recorded her 13th complete-game win. Deschaine sat down nine on strikeouts and surrendered three runs on six hits.
The Jags got another long ball from Edwards in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-3 final. The top of the Jaguar lineup caused chaos for the Cougars, Benton going 3-4, Bagley 2-3 with three runs and three RBI, and Edwards 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Senior Casey Rowland added an RBI on one hit.
CSU slinger Hanna Manley (7-10) made the start in game two and was pulled after she allowed six hits for five runs (three earned) in her 1.1 inning on the mound.
The Jaguars travel to North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga., to take on the Nighthawks on Thursday, April 14 for a 2:00 p.m. PBC double feature.
