Jags Take No. 7 North Georgia To 14 Innings In Marathon Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars took No. 7 North Georgia to 14 innings in game two of their Peach Belt Conference doubleheader and fell 1-0, after they dropped game one by just run as well on Thursday afternoon.

Augusta moves to 18-32 overall and 7-15 in the PBC. North Georgia (45-6, 21-1 PBC) leads the league standings and survived game one 4-3 before the Jaguars played their longest game of the season and fell 1-0 in the second game.

UNG took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one on three wild pitches and a single, but the Jags made it a one-run affair when they scored three runs off two errors in the fourth inning.

The Jags couldn't conjure another run off North Georgia starter Courtney Poole (45-2) and fell 4-3 in the first meeting. Poole allowed three hits in game one and gave up three unearned runs in her 7.0 innings on the mound with seven strikeouts.

Augusta freshman Emily Hittinger made her 12th appearance of the season when she took over for starter Haley Birkle (6-12) on the mound in the first inning, but Birkle would return to the finish the game. Birkle allowed three hits for four runs and struck out three in her 6.0 innings pitched.

Sophomore Lindsey Stokes went 2-3 with a run for Augusta and junior Ashley Benton was 1-3 with a run in game one. UNG's Stephanie Hartness, Meredith Heyer, Brittani Crawford, and Alexis Collis each had a hit.

Augusta senior pitcher Paige Deschaine and UNG senior Courtney Poole are tied for 18th in the nation on NCAA.com with 8.8 strikeouts per seven innings and they faced off in game two on the mound.

Deschaine and Poole carried a no-score game into the 14th inning of game two, but the UNG offense drew a walk in the bottom of the 14th and knocked a game-ending single for the only run of the game.

Deschaine (10-10) struck out nine and surrendered seven hits for one run in her long outing of 13.2 innings. Poole had 17 strikeouts and gave up two hits in her 14.0 innings.

In game two sophomores Auburn Balcorta and Erin Rozier each recorded a hit for the Jags.

Augusta travels to Lander University on Sunday, April 17 for a 3:00 p.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to close out the regular season.
