Box Score 2 GREENWOOD, S.C. – Augusta traveled to Lander on Sunday afternoon for their final regular-season series and fell 7-5 and 2-0 in Peach Belt Conference action.
The Jaguars (18-34, 7-17 PBC) outhit Lander (26-20, 12-12 PBC) seven to six in game one and matched four hits in game two.
Sunday's doubleheader marked the last games of the 2016 season and closes out a memorable career for Augusta seniors Kristen Bagley, Haley Birkle, Paige Deschaine, and Casey Rowland.
Bagley went 1-3 with a run in game one, and Casey Rowland had a run and RBI. Birkle and Rowland also carded hits in game two. Birkle and Deschaine made the starts on the mound for the Jaguars with Birkle dealing in game one and Deschaine capping it off in the second meeting.
Augusta scored first on the day when Rowland touched home on an error, before sophomore Ashley Boyd plated sophomores Erin Rozier and Auburn Balcorta for a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one.
Two errors and a three-run homer highlighted Lander's second inning as they took a 6-3 swing over Augusta. The Jags got two back in the top of the third when Bagley scored on an illegal pitch and Rowland drove in sophomore Lindsey Stokes for a 6-5 ballgame.
The Jags gave back one run in the fifth inning and the Bearcats survived for a 7-5 final.
Birkle (6-13) pitched 6.0 innings for Augusta and gave up six hits for seven runs, but just one was earned. McKenzi Ferguson (16-9) went the distance for Lander and allowed five runs on seven hits.
Rozier went 2-4 with a run for Augusta, while Boyd had two RBI and went 1-2 in game one. Lander's Casey Kent went 2-2 with three RBI and a run and MaKenzie Smith was 1-3 with three RBI and two runs.
Deschaine (10-11) held Lander to four hits for two runs while striking out six in game two. Lander scored two runs in the fourth inning and held the Jags scoreless to seal the series sweep.
