Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, N.C. – In their last regular-season road series of 2016, the Augusta Jaguars opened the weekend at UNC Pembroke with a pair of losses in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Jaguars (28-16, 17-10 PBC) and UNCP (26-19, 12-14 PBC) were forced to play a doubleheader on Saturday after inclement weather washed out the scheduled game for Friday night. The Braves edged Augusta by one run in the first meeting and came back from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning of game two.
The Braves brought in the first run of the weekend in the first inning of game one, but the Jaguars tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth on an error for an unearned run. Three singles from UNCP in the sixth inning made it 4-1, but Augusta would rally late.
In their last scheduled at bat in game one, the Jags moved runners to second and third and scored a pair on two hits from Jamal Cummings and Drew Taylor, but UNCP got the game-ending out to win 4-3.
Junior Jamal Cummings was 3-4 with two runs to pace the Jags in game one. Senior Tristan Jones (7-3) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed nine hits for three runs in the loss. Sophomores Casey Lenoch and Jordan Kelley each tossed 0.1 innings, before senior David Bermudez logged 2.0 innings to close out the game.
Jesse Stinnett went 8.0 innings on the mound for UNCP and gave up five hits for two runs to get the win in game one.
A sacrifice fly gave the Braves their second lead in the first inning to start game two. Augusta responded with two runs in the fourth inning when senior Cole Thompson and Cummings each scored unearned runs on a few UNCP errors.
Augusta gave the lead back on a two-run homer in the fourth inning, but junior Clint Hardy blasted a solo long ball in the fifth after senior Drew Taylor scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 game.
The lead expanded when they scored four runs in the fifth to command a 6-3 game. C. Thompson pated senior Connor Gilbert on a double before senior Nick Rau produced a sacrifice fly.
The Braves rallied for four runs in the eighth inning and stole an 8-6 game for the doubleheader sweep.
Joey Stillwell logged 4.2 innings on the mound to surrender four hits for four runs, before Aron Chick, Frank Warren, and David Hagelston pitched. Warren gave up three runs on three hits to take the loss in 1.0 innings.
C. Thompson went 4-4 with an RBI and two runs and junior Tyler Roberts was 3-4. The Jags totaled 10 hits overall.
Augusta meets the UNCP Braves for game three on Sunday, April 24 for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
The Jaguars host their final regular-season series of 2016 April 29-May 1 against Georgia College for a Peach Belt Conference series at Jaguar Field. Augusta will host 2016 Senior Day on Saturday, April 29 prior to first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
