Jags Lose Two To No. 12 Lenoir-Rhyne

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team started its longest home stint of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field with a non-conference doubleheader against the No. 12 nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Augusta fell 10-2 in game one 6-1 in the sequel.

 

 

The doubleheader against LRU (21-4) started a 10-game home stand for Augusta (5-17). The Jags host Erskine on Thursday, March 15 for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference double feature at Jaguar Field. AU plays Georgia Southwestern March 17 for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader and meets Columbus State on Sunday, March 18 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. AU wraps its home stand on Wednesday, March 21 with a 2:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against Claflin.

 

Game 1 vs. LRU

The Bears booked five runs in the second inning, but AU spoiled the large lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Lindsey Stokes hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and senior Carolyn Edwards reached on an error in the next at bat. Lenoir-Rhyne pushed across five more runs and won 10-2 in five innings.

 

Jags sophomore Courtney Browne took over pitching duties for sophomore Morgan Hunter (3-8) in the second inning and pitched 4.0 innings to strike out two and allow six hits for five runs (three earned).

 

The Jags compiled three hits, with Stokes, Edwards, and sophomore Lydia Hausman producing the offense, but the Bears had 11 hits in game one of the midweek series.

 

Game 2 vs. LRU

LRU led first with a lone run in the first inning. Edwards and Hausman knocked back-to-back singles for AU in the bottom of the opening inning to load the bases, but LRU got out of it with a strikeout. The Bears capitalized on four Jaguar errors in the third inning and led 5-0.

 

The Jaguars broke open the shutout in their last scheduled at bat, when senior Ashley Boyd drove in Edwards who reached on a leadoff doubles.

 

Augusta sophomore Jada Jackson (1-3) only allowed two earned runs in the six that scored in the game and struck out three batters, while surrendering 14 hits.

 

Leading AU's offense was Edwards, Boyd, and freshman Bella Fernandez who each posted two hits.
