Box Score 3 AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Columbus State University and fell 8-0 and 9-4 at Jaguar Field on Saturday.
Augusta moved to 4-12 overall (2-9 PBC), while Columbus State is now 16-3 (10-1 PBC). Augusta hosts Columbus State University this Sunday, March 8th at 1:00 p.m. to wrap the three game series.
GAME 1
The Cougars took the lead early in the first inning when Columbus State's B. Horned hit a grand slam in the beginning of the 1st inning. The visiting team carded additional runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.
Augusta's Ben Markiewicz was the only Jag to card multiple hits for the day. The third baseman was 2-for-4 on the day.
AU freshman Will Cantrell started his third game of the year pitched 3.1 innings. Cantrell struck out 5 batters and allowed 8 hits for 7 runs (6 earned). Freshman Austin Heard took over in the 3rd inning and pitched for 3.2 innings. He was replaced by Trevor Gordon and eventually Joseph Pitman.
GAME 2
Columbus State scored 3 runs in a series of 4 plays in the third inning, giving the Cougars an early lead. A Garrettt Suiter double to left field allowed Carrington Evans to score. Junior Skylor Murphy hammered a 2-run homer the next play to even the score at 3-3. Two answering runs by Columbus State in the 5th inning gave the Cougars another lead. A double by Brian Smith allowed Mason Robertson to score in the bottom of the 5th, however the Jags were unable to overcome the deficit and fell 9-4.
Junior Mason Robertson went 3-for-5 with run 1 in the game. Designated hitter Theron Powell was 2-for-5. Left fielder Brian Smith was 2-for-3 with an added RBI. Skylor Murphy had one hit, but carded 2RBI in the contest.
Four different pitchers saw time on the Mound for Augusta. Jaguar Junior Hunter Norman (1-3) earned the start and struck out two in 4.0 innings of action, while surrendering six hits for four runs. Chase Horton pitched for 3.0 innings and allowed 3 runs. Rylan Lairs and Alex Colon each pitched in relief for Augusta.
