Softball team volunteers in Augusta Buddy Walk

EVANS, GA - The Augusta University softball team recently volunteered their time for the Augusta Buddy Walk on Nov. 9 at the Evans Town Center Park.

The Buddy Walk is part of the National Down Syndrome Society which holds these events nationwide. The purpose is to educate, advocate and celebrate those with Down syndrome. Besides walking and cheering on the participants, there were other activities held where softball team members assisted with those with Down syndrome to make for a fun day.

"They (the team) see the value and they know what they are contributing to matters," said Melissa Brocato, softball head coach. "I think we have a team of really generous hearted people so they enjoy giving to others."

According to Augusta Buddy Walk, the organization this year exceeded their goal and raised over $19,000 during the fundraiser. That money will stay local to benefit area programs, activities, outreach services, camps, educational workshops and advocacy initiatives.

"Our teams like kids so it's always fun when they get to do something with younger kids, so they really enjoyed it," added Brocato.
