AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's tennis team played a doubleheader against Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at the Newman Tennis Center, falling 4-2 in the first match before bouncing back with a dominant 4-0 victory in the second.
In the first match, Augusta picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles but was unable to overcome Belmont Abbey's strong play. Arthur Valette secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3, while Humberto Pinto battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 5. Enzo Garutti, Alexis Bailhache, and David Perret each dropped their matches, while the No. 6 singles match was left unfinished. Belmont Abbey also secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, despite Augusta's 6-1 victory at No. 2 from Valette and Perret.
The Jaguars responded in the second match with a convincing 4-0 win. Bailhache earned a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, while Valette overcame a slow start to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 4-4 (99-0) victory at No. 2. Redwane Bouhadja clinched the team win with a 6-2, 7-5 result at No. 6. Doubles play saw Augusta claim two of three matchups, with Sakiyama and Bailhache edging out a 7-6 (11-9) win at No. 1 and Valette and Perret cruising to a 6-2 victory at No. 2.
