Augusta Splits With Saint Leo on the Diamond in Opening Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Augusta, Ga. - After dropping the season opener to Saint Leo 14-4, Augusta rebounded in game two and scored four late runs to win 6-4 to get the doubleheader split. Game three of the series scheduled fo Sunday has been canceled due to the weather expected in the area.

GAME ONE
In the opener, the Lions scored four runs in the first and were never challenged en route to the win. The Jaguars did score a run in the bottom of the first when Mattheson Go would reach on a fielders choice. Go would steal second and score when Davis Newman reached on an error. That would be the lone AU run of the game as Jakob Cowart and Jake Vachon would each pick up a pair of hits.

GAME TWO
In the nightcap, the Jaguars would rally for two runs in the sixth to tie the game and then Nolan Turner would blast an opposite field home run in the seventh giving Augusta the win. 

Augusta wrapped out 11 hits with six of them being doubles and the Turner homer to post the victory. Ty Cobb would get the win in relief and Elijah Durnell came in to get the Lions in order in the ninth for the save. 

Saint Leo did strike first in the opening inning, but AU would respond in the bottom half . Cowart would double to lead things off and score on a Turner double two batters later. 

It would be 2-1 Lions in the third when AU would again respond. This time Newman would double home Nolan Turner to tie the game at two. 

The Lions would take a two run lead in the sixth before the late inning heroics from the Jaguars. In the bottom of the sixth, Roland Chance singled with one out to get things going. Matthew Thigpen would deliver a pinch-hit double and then freshman Nathan Martin delivered a two-run single for the tying runs. 

That would set the stage for the seventh as Turner would crush one off the scoreboard in right field.

On the mound, Caleb Jatko started game two and went six innings giving up five hits, four runs, two of them earned. Cobb pitched two innings of scoreless ball with a pair of strikeouts and Durnelll would finish things off in the ninth.
