WINGATE, N.C. – Wingate swept a non-conference doubleheader from Augusta State Saturday at Ron Christopher Stadium.
In a 7-3 loss in game one, sophomore outfielder Matt Smith went 4-for-4 with an RBI for the Jaguars. Senior outfielder Alex Walker added a pair of hits and a run scored, while senior third baseman Onufrak had two hits and an RBI.
Dodson McPherson sparked the Bulldogs with a 2-for-4 effort that included a grand slam and two runs scored. Chris Vazquez, Jacob Karr and James Tedder each had two hits, an RBI and run scored for the Bulldogs, who scored all seven runs in the fourth inning.
Wingate lefthander Chris Nelson (2-0) got the win, allowing one run on five hits in 5.0 innings while striking out seven. ASU's Joah Evans took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. He allowed five runs on six hits in three innings of work, striking out one.
In game two, ASU struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of two errors for a 1-0 lead but fell 7-2.
The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the second before an RBI groundout from Onufrak tied the game 2-all in the top of the third. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead 3-2 in the fourth and added four runs in the fifth. McPherson's bases-clearing 3-run triple to right center put Wingate ahead 7-2.
McPherson again did the damage, going 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Freshman Menelik Vereen and sophomores Jake Sutton and sophomore Brac Barton had the only three hits for the Jags.
Justin Nygard (1-0) earned the win, allowing an earned run and three hits in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts. ASU sophomore right-hander Scott Shipman (0-1) took the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work, striking out six.
The Jags and Bulldogs wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
