Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Entering on a three-game Peach Belt Conference winning streak, the Jaguars split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the UNC Pembroke Braves 4-1 and 10-1 Sunday afternoon at Jaguar Field
UNCP (14-20, 2-6 PBC) took game one against the Jaguars (11-16, 4-3) behind starting pitcher Taylor Gilley.
Scoreless into the fifth inning ASU went up on the Braves 1-0 off an error. Gilley (6-6) had a no-hitter through six innings and kept it intact with the Jags scoring on an error from the UNCP shortstop.
ASU freshman right-hander Kristen Mills retired the side in her first inning and held a one-hitter into the seventh inning. Mills pitched 8.0 innings for one run on three hits and dealing two strikeouts before she was relieved in the ninth.
Senior Lauren Yeargan ended Gilley's no-hitter and took her out of the game with a leadoff double to right field. UNCP's Natalie Klemann relieved in the sixth to get strikeouts to end the inning. The Braves knotted the game and forced extra innings on a homerun to left center from Kaytee Wilson. Freshman Paige Deschaine (1-5) came on in the ninth and gave up a single up the middle for a 2-1 UNCP lead. The Braves knocked a single to left field for a 4-1 final score. Natalie Kleeman (5-6) relieved to get the win for the Braves in 4.0 innings.
The Jags went up 3-0 in the first inning and enjoyed a six-run third inning on seven hits to stroll to a 10-1 win in the fifth inning.
Freshman Erika Burkhart ripped a triple to right field for two RBIs and Macy Terry plated her with an RBI-single in the first inning. Walton singled in the second to score Vaughn from second base, but the Braves plated one in the second on a single.
In the third, Burkhart scored on a throwing error from the UNCP catcher after Nichole Lyday singled for a 5-1 lead. Five hits in a row from ASU brought up Stephens who was hit by a pitch. Walton came up and blasted an inside the park homerun down the left field line.
The Jags ended the third up 10-1 on the Braves and freshman lefty Haley Birkle (2-5) who started game two, closed out the fourth and fifth as ASU took a run-rule win over the Braves.
Yeargan went 2-for-5 on the day, while Walton was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs in game two. Burkhart was 2-for-3 in game two with two RBIs and two runs, while Terry and Laura Brown went 2-for-2 in the second meeting.
The Jags are back at home this Wednesday, March 20 for a non-conference doubleheader against the Carson Newman Eagles.
