Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguar baseball team met the Newberry Wolves for the third time this season on Tuesday, Feb. 17 and used a walk-off single from freshman Christopher Michals to score Drew Taylor in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 5-4 non-conference win.
The Jaguars (4-3) took the season opener from the Wolves (6-4) 11-1 off 18 hits on Jan. 31, before dropping a 4-1 game at Newberry the next day on Feb 1.
GRU started Tristan Jones on the mound for the first time in 2015 on Tuesday afternoon. Jones had four strikeouts after the first two innings and ended up going 2.1 innings, giving up four hits and striking out five in the no decision.
After two pitches in their first at bat, the Jags had a runner in scoring position after Tyler Roberts singled and took second on a passed ball. Four straight singles from Roberts, Hunter Boose, Nick Rau, and Drew Taylor plated two runs and a groundball double play scored another for a quick 3-0 lead.
Newberry's Robert Westenrieder made the start and pitched 6.0 innings, giving up eight hits for three runs while striking out two, but the Wolves would go to the bullpen end eventually brought out three arms.
The Wolves broke open the shutout in the third inning. Back-to-back singles started the inning and Brandon Sheridan lined one up the middle off GRU reliever Hunter Boose for a 3-1 game. Boose got a fly ball to right field to get out of the inning and leave the bases loaded. The Jags went to Frank Warren and Will Robertson in the bullpen and only one hit was given up between the two.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Jags added an insurance run when CJ Reed lined a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Nick Rau for a 4-2 advantage. The Jags brought in Adam Grice on the mound for the eighth and ninth inning. Grice had a quiet eighth inning, but three hits scored two runs to tie the game in the ninth inning.
In their last regularly-scheduled at bat of the game, GRU got two quick outs before Taylor singled and a walk moved him to second. Michals came up and sent a soft fly ball to shallow right field to plate Taylor from second for a 5-4 win. Adam Grice (1-0) got the win in 2.0 innings of work, giving up three hits for two runs.
Newberry's (0-1) Dylan Southerland came in to the close out the ninth and took the loss in 0.2 innings.
The Jags were led by Taylor's 3-3 day, while Roberts, Rau, and Michals went 2-5 on the day.
The Jags host the Tampa Spartans for a three-game series this weekend Feb. 20-22, beginning with a 6:00 p.m. single game on Friday, Feb. 20 at Lake Olmstead. There will be no live video for the event, but live stats will be provided. LIVE STATS
