Junior Will Thompson strikes out six in 7.0 innings

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars outhit Florida Southern 13-5 in game two of the non-conference series for a 6-0 shutout win to split the weekend at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Junior lefthander and transfer from Auburn, Will Thompson, struck out two in his first inning of his first start as a Jaguar. The Augusta offense gave him an early boost as the Jags knocked three doubles and a home run in the first inning to lead 4-0.

The long ball came from senior Connor Gilbert on the first pitch he saw of the game to plate senior Drew Taylor with a towering left-field blast.

Thompson (1-0) struck out six batters in his 7.0 innings on the mound while allowing four hits for zero runs in the Augusta win.

In the eighth inning with senior Hunter Boose on first and junior Clint Hardy on third, Augusta's Drew Taylor lined a double down the left-field line to clear the bases for a 6-0 advantage.

FSC's Cameron Hanes (0-1) tossed 6.0 innings for FSC and gave up four runs on eight hits in the loss. Craig Savage logged 2.0 innings to allow two runs on five hits.

Hardy went 3-for-5 with a scored run and Boose, Taylor, and Gilbert were all 2-for-4 with Taylor driving in three. Sophomore Jim Wagner had a 2-for-4 outing with four putouts in left field.

Out of the bullpen, sophomore Casey Lenoch and senior Frank Warren each pitched one inning of no-score baseball, with Warren carding a strikeout.

The Jaguars continue the season on Friday, Feb. 5 when Augusta travels to the Pepsi Cola Pop-Off Series (Feb. 5-7), hosted by Francis Marion University in Florence S.C. FMU hosts the tourney that will feature Augusta University, King University (Tenn.), and Claflin University. Francis Marion starts the event with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch against King and following the game Augusta will play Claflin at 5:00 p.m.

The Jags face King on day two of action with a 12:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, followed by FMU and Claflin at 3:00 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday with King facing Claflin at 12:00 p.m. and Augusta against the FMU Patriots at 3:00 p.m.
