Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – An RBI walk to senior Cole Thompson gave the Augusta Jaguars an 8-7 walk-off win in the 11th inning to close out their first Peach Belt Conference series of the season over the Montevallo Falcons. The extra-inning win gave the Jags the series sweep over the Falcons to open PBC competition.
Before the finale, the Jaguars (11-4, 3-0 PBC) won 10-6 over the Falcons (7-8, 2-4 PBC) in game one and 11-7 in game two to begin the series.
"Really, really excited for our team and our program to be able to get off to a good start in conference play," Head Coach Jason Eller said. "Montevallo's got a really good team and they were coming off a series win against (UNC) Pembroke on the road."
Game three saw four pitchers take the mound for the Jags. Junior lefty Will Thompson got the start and pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits before being relieved by junior right-hander Will Robertson and right-handed senior CJ Reed.
Sophomore transfer Casey Lenoch came in and pitched 5.2 innings, carrying the Jags to an extra-inning win.
The Falcons got on the board first off the bat of senior Jeremy Hyde. His two-RBI homer over the left-field wall put two on the board in the first inning. The Jags answered with four straight singles from their first four batters, scoring three runs and taking the lead. Seniors Nick Rau (2-6; 2-RBI) and Drew Taylor (2-5; 2-RBI) earned one and two-RBI, respectively.
Falcon's senior Thomas Bradley knocked one out in the second inning and the Falcons tacked on three more off of a walk and three singles, taking a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Jags junior Clint Hardy (2-6; RBI) slapped his second homerun of the season to bring the Jags within two. Cole Thompson and Rau both drove in runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at six.
Back-to-back singles in the sixth brought in the final run of the game for Montevallo. The Jags turned to sophomore righty Casey Lenoch, who finished the game, pitching 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts, three hits, and only one walk. The Jags countered in the eighth inning, bringing in a run on an RBI double to right-center field by senior Hunter Boose (2-5; RBI).
The game went to extra innings and in the top of the 11th inning, Lenoch's walked his first batter of the game. Lenoch struck out the next batter, his seventh of the day, and Cole Thompson caught the base-runner stealing second, his second of the day, to save the inning.
Drew Taylor's second hit of the game came in the eleventh inning on a single to right field. Senior Connor Gilbert (2-4) walked for his second time of the game and then the Falcons intentionally walked sophomore Jim Wagner (2-4) to load the bases with no outs. Cole Thompson drew a walk to score the run and win the game.
"We were the last ones to the party to start conference play and we were thrilled to get off to a good start. We've got to work on some things and get back to the fundamentals, because we have another big week coming up," Eller said.
