Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars capped off a non-conference weekend sweep with a pair of 4-2 wins of King College on Saturday in Florence, S.C.
Augusta (4-1) won a 12-4 non-conference game over Claflin in game one of the tourney hosted by Francis Marion University on Friday, Feb. 5. In day two they met King for back-to-back seven-inning games and won both by a score of 4-2.
Three runs in the fourth inning of game one put the Jags up first. Senior Nick Rau singled to start the inning and reached third after a passed ball and groundball. Sophomore Chris Michals carded an RBI with a liner up the middle to score Rau. Juniors Tyler Roberts and Clint Hardy produced consecutive singles to score Michals and junior Cole Janousek for a 3-0 advantage.
Senior righty David Bermudez (1-1) made his second start of the season and pitched 5.0 innings to hold King scoreless. Rau was 4-6 on the day.
Janousek gave the Jags one more run when he carded an RBI in the sixth, scoring Michals again.
King got on the board in the top of the seventh when Mark Hencken doubled to score one, before a Jaguar infield error made the game a two-run affair at 4-2. Jordan Kelly and Casey Lenoch each made brief appearances on the mound for the Jags behind Bermudez before lefty Frank Warren closed it out.
Rau went 2-3 while batting cleanup, while the bottom half of the order carried most of the offensive prowess. Michals, Janousek, and Roberts each went 2-3 in the win for Augusta.
In game two, lefty junior Will Thompson logged 3.1 innings in his second start of the year. Thompson gave up five hits for two early runs and junior-transfer Joey Stillwell pitched 3.2 innings to close it out.
After King took a 2-0 lead in the first, the Jags chipped away at the lead with one run in the second, fourth, six and seventh. Junior Clint Hardy was 2-4 with an RBI and senior Hunter Boose 2-4 with two runs.
Augusta combined for nine hits, while King put up seven. Stillwell (1-0) got the win after coming on the in fifth inning and striking out his first batter he faced.
Augusta hosts Anderson for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 13 in Lake Olmstead Stadium.
