Augusta Holds Montevallo Scoreless In Doubleheader Sweep

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Hosting their first doubleheader of two in their last weekend at home on the season, the Augusta Jaguars shutout the Montevallo Falcons 4-0 in game one before winning 1-0 in game two on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. On the mound for the Jags, senior Haley Birkle posted a season-best 10 strikeouts in game one, while senior Paige Deschaine dealt a no hitter in the second meeting.  

The Jaguars (17-29, 6-12 PBC) move to 10-6 at home with the pair of wins where the held Montevallo scoreless across both games.

In her 13th start of the season, Jags senior Haley Birkle (6-10) posted her season-high 10 strikeouts in game one, while allowing two hits in her complete-game win.

The Falcons (19-28, 3-11 PBC) loaded the bases in the third inning with one out, but Birkle blew by back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning unscathed in a no-score game. Birkle stranded seven Falcons baserunners after the fourth inning and cruised the rest of the way.

Sophomore Erin Rozier delivered her second hit of the game with a solo home run over left-centerfield for a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Two straight singles started the Jags' fifth inning and a walk loaded the bases. Sophomore Lindsey Stokes lined an opposite-field single to score junior Ashley Benton and Rozier knocked her third hit of the game to leftfield for a 4-0 Jaguar lead.

Rozier was 3-3 with three RBI and a run and Stokes went 1-3 with an RBI as Augusta outhit the Falcons 6-2.

UM's Jana Kelbie Armstrong (2-5) started on the mound in the first meeting and went 4.1 innings to allow five hits for four runs. Sydney Abounassar came on in relief for Montevallo but the Jags prevailed for the shutout win.

There was no score in game two until the bottom of the fifth when senior Kristen Bagley laid down a suicide-bunt single to score Benton for a one-run advantage.

Jags right-handed senior Paige Deschaine (9-9) made her 16th start of the season and didn't allow a hit as she threw 12 strikeouts.

Benton was 2-3 with a run, Bagley had an RBI and went 1-2, and Rozier recorded another hit with two walks.

Montevallo sent Joshlyn Rivera (5-14) to the mound for the second game and she got the loss in 6.0 innings – allowing five hits for one run.

Augusta hosts their final home series on Sunday, April 10 against the Columbus State Cougars at 2:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field.
