AUGUSTA, GA - It's go time for the Augusta University softball team as they start the 2025 season on Saturday, Feb. 1 at North Greenville. This year's team has some lofty goals as they look to improve on past seasons.
Melissa Brocato starts her 27th year as coach and indicated the team is focusing on the present, not the past.
"We've talked a lot about not being defined by the past, not being defined by other people. We're staying focused on who we know we are, what we've worked on, and we expected to see positive results from that," said Brocato.
One thing that Brocato has really liked so far is the team has taken more ownership and accountability. They have a good work ethic and are staying positive, even through the off-season adversity such as the hurricane and snow storm that hit the Augusta area. Those experiences alone has made this team come together and they continue to buy in to the program.
Pre-season all-
Peach Belt Conference selections Bailee Roberts and
Bobbi Poff should lead the offense. Last year, Roberts led the team in hitting with Poff right behind her as both hit over .300 for the year. They are appreciative of the preseason nod but remain humble, and Brocato said they just want to help the Jaguars win.
Cadance Winder is another returner who should play a big role in the offensive attack.
With eight freshmen and three transfers, a lot will be expected out of them as they are thrust into the lineup on a day-to-day basis. But looking at what they've done already, Brocato is excited about the approach they take and are focusing on the task at hand.
"We're probably not going to be a power hitting team, we're probably going to be more of a doubles team, but we've got more speed then we've had in the past so that's going to be helpful," added Brocato.
In the circle, expect to see several pitchers given the chance to prove themselves. Brocato indicated they have the potential to carry their own weight which is a good thing.
Start strong and finish strong has been one of Brocato's mantras and while she knows there will be some adversity and having the strong mindset will allow the team to do just that.
"We're trying to get rid of the 'oh well' mindset and that mentality. We've talked about how to do that practically. We call them 'ants,' automatic negative thoughts. How can we squish the ants and keep moving forward in a positive way," said Brocato.
Following the opening games in North Greenville, the team will be home for a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 2 against Catawba.
