COLUMBUS, Ga - The Augusta University softball team split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Columbus State on Friday, securing a 4-2 extra-inning win in game one before falling 2-1 in game two. The Jaguars moved to 16-14 overall and 2-4 in PBC play.
Game one: Augusta 4, Columbus State 2 (11 innings)
Augusta took an early lead in the first inning when Ayellad Howard singled and later scored on an RBI hit from Ansley Gibson. Columbus State tied it in the second with a solo home run and then took a 2-1 lead in the third after a triple and an RBI groundout.
The Jaguars evened the score in the fourth when Gibson doubled down the right-field line and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Cadance Winder. The game remained tied at 2-2 until the 11th inning, when Augusta broke through. Bobbi Poff led off with a single, and Bailee Roberts walked to put two runners on. Winder then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Poff, and Kelsea Moody followed with an RBI single to drive in Roberts, securing the 4-2 victory.
Madalyn Spinks (5-2) went the distance for Augusta, throwing 11.0 innings while allowing just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Game two: Columbus State 2, Augusta 1
In a tightly contested second game, Augusta grabbed the lead in the second inning when Gibson doubled to center field and later scored on an RBI single by Audrey Johnson. Columbus State tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run before winning it in the seventh with another solo shot.
Gibson (5-5) pitched well despite taking the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings, striking out two. Johnson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Gibson went 2-for-2 with a double.
Augusta continues Peach Belt Conference play with the series finale against Columbus State on March 15 at 12:00pm.
